On forgiveness...

I posted a very awkward 3 part tweet (twitter.com/justinjelinek if you care to follow) earlier about my thoughts on forgiveness.

As I find humanity increasingly superficial and phony I question what the purpose of forgiveness is.

I did a little research (there are some thoughtful articles on the google) and I found this:

And I seem to have slipped into the second paragraph believing that "believe that forgiving gives the offender license to continue the hurtful behavior in which he or she has engaged and, furthermore, that it makes the injured party appear weak, maintaining a power differential that favors the offender over the victim."

At the same time I realize that having this view nearly necessitates an expectation that humanity must be perfect, otherwise there would be no need for apologies and forgiveness.

Among most of my family and close friends, I have no problem taking apologies and forgiveness at face value without being suspicious of motive. In these instances (not that there have been many) I do trust that person is not apologizing or forgiving out of obligation, but out of a desire to repair and continue the relationship.

At the same time I've had relationships and friendships where forgiveness cleary put me in a position to be hurt repeatedly, which would make it easy for me to believe that forgiveness equals weakness.

This contrast means that to some extent, the enduring trust I've had with family and friends clearly plays a role in how I determine whether or not it is wise to forgive.

So more specifically, I think it is the forced apologies or ones with ulterior motives that I find difficult to understand. There are many forms of forced or manipulative apologies, but one story of the day has really focused this question in my mind.

College professer Nir Rosen tweeted some very disgusting jokes at the expense of Journalist Lara Logan who was the victim of a sexual assult in Egypt while on assignment:

What purpose was served by Nir Rosen apology to Lara Logan, what purpose would her forgivness serve?

Or if you prefer to put it in context of other public apologies (Michael Vick, Pres Clinton, Tiger Woods, etc...) please offer your thoughts.

I'd rather not be right that forgiveness is weakness, perhaps your thoughts will help.

Groups G and H scenarios (Fr, 25 June)

NOTE: "combined margin" refers to the sum of the margin of victory for the team reqired to win and the margin of defeat for the team required to lose in a particular scenario.

*Indicates other scenarios possible in the event of a tie on GD with GF being the next tiebreaker. Placement for teams tied on both GD and GF are determined by head to head result (if not drawn) followed by drawing of lots.

GROUP G
North Korea - Ivory Coast
Portugal - Brazil

Groups G and H I believe are the two strongest in the tournament and the top two finishers of each will be paired together in the round of 16 (1st G v 2nd H, 2nd G v 1st H). Brazil and Portugal are definitely two of the five best sides in the world. This is a late round caliber match in the group stage. Brazil is certainly through and thanks to that 7-0 drubbing of North Korea, Portugal will be there barring a major, major collapse (yes a collapse even worse than the Boston Bruins this year). When we get to group H you will see it looks like Chile and Spain, both could prove to be difficult matchups. Ivory coast is a long shot having to win and make up 9 goals in the difference column, North Korea is eliminated (not that I expect Kim Jong-Il to tell his citizens the truth on that).

GROUP H (1.30pm ct)
Switzerland - Honduras
Chile - Spain

Chile are a very underrated side despite the fact they lead Brazil during much of South American Qualifying. Spain are ranked highly, but have shown the vulnerabilities that saw them upset at last summers Confederation's cup. Switzerland are still very much alive as their final match is against a disappointing Honduras side which looked good in CONCACAF qualifying. (personally I'm glad Honduras' ping pong ball was drawn here instead of the US's back in december, I imagine the Yanks would've fared only slightly better than Honduras in this group). The Swiss have a shot, but must get some help to overcome their one goal defecit to Spain. Honduras is mathematically alive, but basically in the same situation France and South Africa are in at Group A. They need a couple big results to go their way.

GROUP E (1.30pm ct)
Denmark - Japan
Cameroon - Netherlands

Netherlands clearly in the drivers seat in this group, though I must say I'm disappointed by their only scoring 3 goals. Denmark and Japan will essentially be playing to see who advances. The goal Denmark conceded on that sloppy clearance in the first half against Cameroon on Saturday is looking pretty important as that is why Japan has the slight edge in goal difference, meaning a draw on Thursday is good enough for Japan. A big result combined with a shocking upset of Netherlands by the eliminated Cameroon might jump Japan or Denmark into first.

GROUP F (9.00am ct)
Paraguay - New Zealand
Slovakia - Italy

This group is very much like Group C with only one decision so far. Paraguay are in front, but they are in a vulnerable position should they lose on Thursday. The defending champion Italy have played to a pair of 1-1 draws as have the All Whites of New Zealand. Every goal is huge in this quartet on Thursday, and every team is still alive.

GROUP C (9.00am ct)
United States - Algeria
Slovenia - England

Oh so much controversy, and I resisted the temptation to write an extra post with these scenarios had the USA beat Slovenia 3:2. England has been a total disappointment (yes looking at you Ben Van Nelson!) but could all be forgiven with a win over Slovenia? Every team controls their own destiny (well Algeria may need a little help if they upset the yanks)

Ghana seem to be the one African side to have success on their home continent. Germany being upset by Serbia has made this group suddenly wide open. The Aussies 4-0 drubbing at the hands of the Germans will cost them many tiebreakers, some of their qualifying scenarios (correctly) look absurd as a result.

Teams listed in order of current standing (points, goal difference, and goals for in parenthesis)

GROUP A (9.00am ct)
Mexico - Uruguay
France - South Africa

The final matches in group A probably provide the least excitement of the groups. Uruguay and Mexico are clearly in the driver's seat and both should go through if their match is close. South Africa or France will need a somewhat big victory combined with a somewhat big defeat by Uruguay and Mexico. Uruguay are basically fighting to avoid Argentina in the Round of 16.

GROUP B (1.00pm ct)
Nigeria - South Korea
Greece - Argentina

It looks pretty good for Argentina to win Group B, only a large defeat will keep them from winning the group. But an exciting battle for the second spot between South Korea and Greece, though the teams will be playing in different matches. South Korea have a slight edge with an extra goal scored (teams being tied on points and goal difference), plus they get to face the currently pointless Nigeria. Still Nigeria have a shot to get in as they've kept their matches close and would emerge with the best goal difference if Greece should lose as well, creating a 3 way tie for 2nd place.

World Cup 2010 End of Group Play

Hello,

Resurrecting this blog from the dead to post the goings on from this wacky week of the world cup. This is when I think the World Cup really gets taken up a notch. It's a great buffer between the usually careful early matches and the pressure of the single elimination stage. This is the week when all the teams play their 3rd and final group matches, and the possibilities are almost endless. Brazil and Netherlands are through to the next round, North Korea and Cameroon are going home. Aside from that 28 teams will battle for the 14 remaining places over the next 4 days.

The really exciting thing about the World Cup format is that the final matches of each group are played simultaneously. ESPN and ESPN2 will each have a match going. Before I got a 9 to 5 job, I would be able to watch more of this tournament and would set my two TV's up next to one another (you can do something similar with espn3.com's mosaic mode if you have it available). But if you know the scenarios, and what to watch for, you can watch both matches at the same time, and in many instances it will seem like all four teams are playing against one another. Look for the next four posts and hopefully it will make your WC viewing exciting this week.

Childress must be fired...

after reading this report in the Pioneer Press today...

"Minnesota Vikings work out four punters today"
http://www.twincities.com/allheadlines/ci_10670296

I am the most livid I have ever been at coach Childress. Calling Kluwe out for not hitting the sidline is insane. The Vikings miss a minimum of two takles covering any kick this season, this doesn't all fall on Kluwe. This should be the simplist thing in the world for coach to take care of. However, Childress has taken what should be a minor coaching correction, and blown it up into this spectacle.

He should be fired. He defends Jackson for two seasons, but is willing to kill Kluwe after one bad game. He's still the 7th best punter in the NFL (by average, 5yds/kick behind the leader), and childress is trying to show Kluwe up like this. Kluwe has been the most consistent person on special teams for the vikes (Kicker Longwell still has his good moments, but sometimes he doesn't...) Childress is now officially an a**hole, and deserves to be fired and forced to coach the Oakland Raiders for all of eternity. I don't care if the vikes go unbeaten or if they lose every game for the rest of the year, Childress needs to go, NOW!

I've always said the Vikes need to hire a yeller to be the head coach, this wasn't Green, Tice, or Childress. I wonder if Bill Cowher is bored at CBS yet? (probably not, but maybe Steve Mariccui wouldn't mind coaching in a dome again, except this time with talent.) But Childress is worse than "soft," he's a stubborn, whiny, scapegoat seeking prick. I hope the half-full metrodome hears me on Sunday...

Day at the Vikings and Other Week 3 thoughts

So I went to the Vikings for the first time in 3 years with my buddy Matt on Sunday. It was a pretty good game. It looked very ugly at the start, but it was all Minnesota after the defensive touchdown that tied it up before the half.

Now so much is being made of Gus Ferrotte's performace. Admittedly he looked better than Jackson has in either of his first two starts, but not by much. Ferrotte was only 16 for 28 and threw 1 int (though it bounced off his reciever so probably not his fault). Ferrotte let himself get sacked on consecutive plays in the 3rd quarter, which gave great field position to the Panthers and a chance to get back in the game.

So Ferrotte was far from perfect, and shouldn't be looked at as the huge hero he's being made out to be. That said he did a couple things that distinguished himself from TJack.

1) He completed 2 big passes beyond 10 yards, including the touchdown on the first drive of the 2nd half.

2) He took a lot of the easier underneath passes and didn't force too many balls deep (the type of the throws Jackson was missing by 5 yards last week).

But as big as Ferrotte was, it was as important that Chester Taylor played a huge game to pick up the extra load from the vikings limiting Adrian Peterson's touches (though AP did make good most of the time when he got the ball, despite his injury).

But this game was won by the "D" and I think the local media would be very critical of Ferrotte if the vikes had lost 21-20 for the things I mentioned. Also for how undiciplined the Vikings played with all their brainless penalties in the 1st Quarter, and how poor the tackling was on kick and punt coverage. Carolina probably should've won given the field position they had until the Vikes engineered that beautiful 11 minute drive that put them up 2 scores. But after looking soft on the Panthers first two drives, the "D" stepped up huge, and getting that touchdown at the end of the 1st half gave the Vikes the confidence they needed to hand the Panthers they're first loss.

So praise the "D" (maybe I'm just extra excited cause I'm crushing him on all fantasy points the Vikes "D" got me this week), and be happy the vikings beat a decent team to avoid what would be a devistating 0-3 start. The Vikes will have to play much better next week to beat 3-0 Tenesee. The Vikes got dumped on schedule-wise for the first 4 weeks, after that it gets much easier.

As for going live the Vikings are 3-0 when I attend. (They beat Detroit in '05, and Miami in '94).

After hitting the concourse at Halftime and how insanly crowed it was I am ready to give Zygi Wilf his $1 billion dollars for his new stadium (jk, but still whenever or however we get the new building, wider concourses!)

Non-viking thoughts

I didn't really think the New England Patriots we're going undefeated again this year. But I didn't think their long regular season losing streak would fall at the hands of last years 1-15 doormat Miami, and by a 3 TD margin. Quite shocking...

If you need further proof that Detroit really sucks again look at this

(lowly) San Francisco 31, Detroit 13.

Yes the Pathetic 49ers ran it up on Detroit. The Lions will be welcome when they appear at the Metrodome in two weeks.

"Community Organizer"

Since the selection of Sarah Palin as John McCain's running mate it's been a couple bad weeks for the Democrats to say the least. I mean really bad. Obama finds himself trailing in polls he seemingly had an insurmountable lead in. The left's biggest allies (NBC, CBS, and ABC, etc...) have been exposed for giving Obama a pass on all the things on which they want to challenge Palin (experience, etc...). And everyone that attack Palin is looking really bad in the process and as they resort to more desparate attacks they make the Dems looks bad, whether or not the actual candidates (Sens. Obama and Biden) are making the attacks themselves or not. And many democratic supporters (both men and women mind you) are starting to jump ship.

But that's not what this blog is really going to be about. I just wanted to establish the fact that on some level I really feel bad for the Dems, and I think I'd like to help them out and offer some free advice (though I know full well they won't take it).

One of the latest attacks that has been made of the GOP is their ridiculing Obama's experience as a "community organizer." And this seems to have really struck a nerve with the Dems and has them all in a tizzy. And they're attacking Palin's experience as a mayor of a town of 9000 (and usually ignoring her experience of being a governor of a state of 600,000, albiet for only 2 years, kind of like Obama's term in the Senate). This attack is blowing up in their faces, yet they still seem desparate to make this woman look bad. So I'm going to offer the Dems the solution that would make Sarah Palin, Rudy Guiliani, and everyone else that makes fun of the title "community organizer" look really bad.

Obama, needs to explain...what exactly... he did... as a "community organizer."

Does a "community organizer" help old ladies across busy Chicago streets?
Does a "community organizer" help plant community gardens?
Does a "community organizer" help scrape winos out of the gutter? (oh I just had a vision of the lanky Barak Obama trying to lift Patrick Warburton out of a subway station for all you fans of "Newsradio" season 5).
Does a "community organizer" get people to paint over graffti?

As the name implies I think it's a perfectly fair question to ask "In what way does a 'community organizer' organize a community to make it a better place.

If Obama or anyone in his campaign could explain a "yes" answer to any of the above questions, or any number of other ways people improve their community, I think Sarah Palin and Rudy Guliani would come off as really mean-spirited for their speeches at the convention. They could run ads with the footage from the conventions side-by-side with Obama's accomplishments. Provided there's any significat accomplishments there.

But the truth is, I don't this they're is. Instead they choose to play the race card, saying the way the GOP used the phrase "community organizer" is a code word for "black person" as if the GOP convention were a KKK meeting (For the record the only former KKK member in the senate is Robert Byrd, D-WV and he was not invited to the convention, though I would love to see that old man try and pick up a newspaper box and throw it through a Macy's window in protest, but again I digress).

The point is the DNC can simply make this mockery of Obama's expereince go away if anyone in the campaign could tell us why being a "community organizer" is significant. This would be a great way for the left to "get Palin" as they seem so intent on doing, and it's so obvious. But, consisent with the hallmark of the Obama campaign, they prefer not to define what exactly this is to let their "open-minded" voters fill in the blank for themselves without knowing what Sen Obama means (see the word "change").

The Presidental Election...

As many of you now I consider myself a conservative among very liberal friends. And most people that are close to me know the whole Republican Nomiation process has left me incredibly frustrated. And I now am starting to realize why...

What we had seeking the republican nomiation were 8 career politicans (admittedly the democrat side looked much the same), that comprimised their values in the Senate, or Congress, etc. The one exception in my mind was former Sen. Fred Thompson, however it turns out he doesn't know how to run a campaign. (I suppose in some ways Ron Paul had a differnt message, but I still look at him as a career politican). It seemed the only people that "knew how to run a campagin" are completly devoid of values. They all seemed to feel entitled to the nomination for "paying their dues" or whatever (so did Hillary for that matter, which is why I'm kind of glad the DNC nominated Obama, and a VP that was anyone other than Hillary).

My number one issue has been national security since 2001. No matter what political direction our nation goes, it doesn't mean a damn thing if we can't protect ourselves from those that want all 300 million of us dead. So I'd like to share my thought process with you, even if you disagree with me, I hope to point out that I've thought this out pretty well, and you'd better be prepared, and I'll respect those that disagree for it.

The Dennis Miller "secret binder theory":

Comedian and Nationally syndicated radio host Dennis Miller has a rather optimistic view of this election. As many of you know Miller became a Pres. Bush supporter after the attacks because he places a high value on our security. After supporting former New York City Mayor Rudolph Guilani in the primary, he is now backing Sen. McCain. But noting that foreign policy rarley changes drastically from one administration to the next the belief is that no matter what the candidates say they will have to continue to fight terrorism. The "Binder theroy" (which I believe is more my term than Miller'), is that President Bush has been acting on a lot of information that isn't safe to make public. And when whoever the next president is (even if it's we're leaving 90 days from when I take office or whatever Sen. Obama) they're going to find out the secrets Pres. Bush knows and have a holy s**t moment no wonder we had to do this when we did.

So if you belive this (which I do somewhat), it doesn't really matter who wins. Even if it's Obama (who I don't agree with on anything), not much will probably change concerning Iraq, or the other nations that pose a threat to us. Though it is dangerous to our nation to negoiate uncondionally with nations that would lie to us. Makes us way to vunerable. Still, a part of me would almost want Obama to win just to watch him not pull us out of Iraq, a tacid admission that the left's unfounded cristicisms of President Bush are unfounded lies, and motived only by their insatiable thirst for power.

Off topic point is even though I disagree with McCain on his throwing of Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld under the bus, and on immigration, I think he's the strongest on the issue of defending our country. But if I believe that our foregin policiy isn't going to change much anyway, maybe I don't have to vote for McCain (as in McCain-Kennedy, McCain-Feingold and his other "maverick" bills that have set free speech back, I have long held the belief that McCain-Feingold did far more damage to the Constitution than anything the left has accused of the Patriot Act). Enter Libertarian nominee (former Republican) Bob Barr...

As far as belief in small goverment, the Libertarian party is absolutly where it's at. I like to think of libertarians as "anarchist's with a fire department." As their bare bones approach to goverment unleashes the resoures every human has. Resources and money travel much better and get used far more efficient than in the goverment. But the only problem with the libertairian party is in my above statement that it doesn't matter which direction our country goes, if we can't defend ourselves. And the Libertarians have missed a tremendous opporutinity to pick off the Guiliani-Miller conserviatives (of which I consider myself), because of their isolationst stances. Still, I really think I was going this direction because I'm tired of supporting a party that offered us that horrible slate of potential nominees, this party put 8 horrible choices on the primary trail. This party that has abandoned the small government principles of conservatism.

Enter Alaska Governor Sarah Palin (yes you knew we were going there)...

First of all, I was very skeptical that whoever McCain picked couldn't change the way I percieve the top of the ticket (especially if it was another RINO, Republican in Name Only, such as Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty). Now whether I liked it or not, I think the truth is McCain was going to win no matter who he picked. The fact that the further from a teleprompter Obama gets the worse he looks. McCain thinks on his feet far better than Obama and that was going to come up in the debates (much like it did for Bush against Former Vice President Al Gore and Sen. John Kerry).

But I'll admit much to my suprise Picking Alaska Governor Sarah Palin has indeed changed the way I perceive this ticket. She's pro-life, pro-gun, pro-drilling, pro-small government, pro low-taxes, and anti-establishment all conservative positions (or at least anti-establishment should be) on which McCain has hedged, in otherwords, nothing like the 8 losers that were seeking the nomination over the past year.

The biggest thing this signals to me is that McCain is ready to back off his anti-ANWR position. To paraphrase conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh "the only people opposed to ANWR are outside of Alaska," and what picking someone from Alaska and is pro-ANWR does give the ticket a way to signal the electorate that McCain is ready to consider drilling, and Obama isn't.

The other biggest thing is the fact she's willing to take on her own party. a corrupt Republican Party in Alaska, and told the U.S. congress no thanks to funding part of the proposed $300 million "bridge to knowhere" to an island of 50 residents (support by now investigated Republican Senator Ted Stevens). To McCain's credit he did criticize this proposal after the I-35W bridge, citing the money would be better spent on bridges like this that take hundreds of thousands of cars a day.

The next thing about Palin is that she's had a life before politics. And that it what is shamefully absent from our leadership on both sides. All we're getting are kids that grew up under Pres. Clintion, got inspiered to go to college to study political science, and the run for something. Now both parties are infested with disgusting un-principled individuals who's only qualification is that they are armed with the knowledge of how to move a poll 2 points by taking a given position. This isn't leadership, this is a bunch of panderers that have no idea what it is to hold a job. I think this is true of McCain, Obama, and Biden. I believe it is far easier to have real world experiece and become a politican, than it is to start life as a politican and then go into the real world. Either way, I think the world of politicians is completly separate for the world of those that don't get to claim all their fuel on expense reports (though in the interest of full disclosure I get to claim some). Or do our own grocery shopping, or have to pay our own mortgages.

So while I will entertain the fact that Palin lacks the national experience one would look for in a VP pick, I think she deserves far more credit for what she accomplished before her political life than Sens. Obama, Biden, and frankly McCain for that matter. While Obama can talk about change, Palin can talk about accomplishments. She can talk about the fact she stopped the wasteful spending on the bridge to knowhere, she took on the corrput Republican party in Alaska. So I hope the GOP takes notice, that THESE ARE THE TYPES OF CANDIDATES WE WANT, no more Huckabee's, Romney's, or any other sellout GOP Senators.

So now we're down to the fact that's she's a woman. I think this is being way overplayed, she's the second woman in history to be nominated to a major ticket (Former Senator Geraldine Ferraro with Sen. "One-State" Walter Mondale in 1984 being the first). But I think too much is being read into that, this pick is about ANWR, and to a lesser extent appealing to those of us in the conservative base (like me), that there is such a thing as a woman who is pro-life and pro-gun. And I think there are many more pro-life women that the left gives women credit for. I think it's a myth that all women should be pro-choice.

So does this mean I'm ready to get on the McCain-Palin ticket, it just may, as Al Franken's commercials say more to come....

Dusting Off the Blog...

I haven't written anything on my blog for a while. The last thing on there was a short list of things that hit my head over what apparently was quite the head-hitting weekend. So here's some random thoughts....

"Arrested Development" Movie:

Oh I hope this happens so badly. This reminds me that "We may have commit some....light treason." ("George Bluth" played by Jeffrey Tambor) may be the funniest one line ever in a sitcom.

Minnesota Wild Summer Woes:

I hope the clock is ticking on Wild GM Dougie Riseborough, losing Rolston to Free Agency, waiving Mark Parrish, and the impending loss of Marion Gaborik is at best poor judgement, but most likley gross incompetence. I hope the new owner will cut him loose this year. Maybe DR will go to Toronto (he can break something that's already broken).

Vikings:

I know the Vikings are loaded this year and as long as QB Tavaris Jackson hasn't forgotten how to hand the ball off to RB Adrian Peterson, we should be in good shape (the other thing TJ has going for him is he doesn't have to throw to WR Troy Williamson this year). On the surface the vikings look like an 11 or 12 win team, but the dissapoinments of Purple Seasons past has muted what should be unabashed optimism. (Plus the fact the vikes drew a tough schedule with Indy, Jax, and the G-men as opponents this year).

Packers:

Don't tell anyone, but I kind of respect the Packers for sticking to their guns on the Brett Favre thing. I know Favre is awesome, blah blah blah (he had one good year in 2007, look at his 2005 and 06 numbers and you'll be far less impressed), but I'm glad they traded him on their terms and not let Farve bully them into forcing a trade to Minnesota (again look at his 2005 and 06 numbers, I'll take my chances with Tjack).

Still at the same time, if they Packers didn't try a horrible bluff that "Aaron Rogers is our quarterback," when Favre was threating to report to camp, the Packers could easily have Favre right now and saved face (though they would undoubtly lose Rogers with no compensation to free agency next year).

Speaking of that, I wonder how much truth there was to the Vikings' interest in Favre. Or to Tampa's interest for that matter, given how little the Jets ended up giving up for Favre (conditional pick 3rd round or higher). I'm starting to think ESPN made a lot of things up in this story. They may not have the journalistic integrity that they're given credit for. I've been getting my online sports news from foxsports.com latley.

Scrabulous being shut down on facebook:

I guess this diminishes "Weird Al" Yankovic's next parody "Too Busy playing Scrabulous" (from the Eagles latest "Too Busy Being Fabulous").

Al Franken:

The Republicans should thank their lucky stars the DFL failed to put anyone up with integrity or credibility. Don't buy into the SNL Stuart Smalley character. Al Franken is nothing more than a bully that resorts to name-calling with anyone that disagrees with him (what was the title of the book that made him famous). From a Democrat point of view the sad thing is Sen. Coleman was probably beatable this year.

I guess that's all the random thoughts for now.

On Yesterday's women's world cup match....

Little backgroud, for those of you who turn off sportscenter after the first 8 minutes.

Yesterday the U.S. Women's national team was blow out by Brazil 4-0 in the world cup Semifinals. Before the match it was announced that Regular goalkeeper Hope Solo was going to be benched in favor of 1999 world cup hero Brianna Scurry. Scurry gave up a few bad goals after which Solo said those are saves she would've made. Solo also was very critical of Coach Ryan's decision.

Normally such critizisms of a player and a coach seem quite unseemly (see Terrel Owens). However, the manager's decision was so poor in this I'm actually willing to defend Solo on this, however I still think it was wrong for Solo to throw Bri under the bus like that, I think her critisizims of Ryan are spot on. What follows in an excerpt from a post I made on the ESPN soccernet boards.

"Cleary, Ryan was the selfish one in all of this. The only reason to bench a keeper with 300 straight shutout minutes is because Ryan wanted to make the semifinal about him. Ryan wanted to make the shocking move that would prove brilliant when the U.S. beat Brazil. He wanted the glory, and this in part is fueled by his huberis that the U.S. can win regardless of who's back there. This blew up in his face, and Julie Foudy on the ESPN broadcast was absoulty right that if this plan was in the back of his mind, why didn't Scurry get a start in one of the first round matches?

A decision this horrible is a result of an ego-manical manager, that had 5 days to overthink this, and at the spur of the moment decided this could be his shot at glory, to do the unthinkable and hope it works out.

And what's so stupid about this is the underlying belief that U.S. were certain to beat Brazil no matter what. The rest of the world of women's soccer has caught up since 1999, and the U.S. were fortunate to outlast England in the quarters (in part due to fine Keeping by Solo, especially in the 1st half).

But when you look at it from this perspective, I don't really have a probelm with Solo calling Ryan out, especially if his motives were questionable. I agree with the OP that this is about the team, but Ryan put himself in front of the team. To make his mark, to get the good press, and it blew up collassaly."
